Children may want to trace where they are from and who their real parents are. You will be quite surprised that this is one of the most used reasons when people go to agencies for the decree. An agency can do this for you and just confirm that there was a divorce without providing details. Or you can also request a hard copy of the decree so that you can look at what happened specifically.

Information related to this are stipulated in the decree so at least you will have the idea on the approximate amount of the penalty and the possible support that you will be getting. You can even use online calculators that are specifically programmed to calculate the amounts for you but there is some data from the records that you will need to input first.
Looking up divorce records is similar to searching other public records. One way to get divorce records is with a local courthouse. If you are sure about where a certain divorce took place, then you can go to the county courthouse and use their locator services. If you know where the event occurred, you can send mail to the statistics office including essential information like the name of the husband or the wife, the date of divorce or annulment and the place of divorce, etc.. Of course, this may not be so easily done and it really depends on the divorce policies per state. Some of the states will actually not give away this information for free, so make sure you do your research when it comes to looking for divorce records. Some places will be easy to work with while others might even make a whole case about it. In situations like that, you will need to hire agencies who are experienced in getting the public records information that you are looking for.
