Cell phones and the gas pump: inferno of misinformation

According to urban legend investigative site Snopes.com, it is a myth that cellular phones cause gasoline pump fires. While your cellular phone instruction manual may have something in there about electromagnetic pulses, the hard truth as outlined by Snopes.com is that science and media reports don’t back up the explosive cell phone-gas pump notion. Scientifically, it sounds possible – that the operation of an electronic system could cause a static charge via electromagnetic waves that could ignite gasoline – but there are no verifiable cases that ever occurring at a gas station. You will still want to avoid using your phone around sensitive hospital and air traffic control equipment, but the fuel pump warning seems toothless.
