Davis Offers Veterans Day Apology For Comic Strip

By admin

Veterans’ Day is set aside for solemn remembrance of the sacrifices the women and men of the Military made for their country. “Garfield” comic strip creator Davis had no intention of besmirching this year’s festivity, but his syndication network wasn’t quite so aware, accounts CNN. The Veterans’ Day “Garfield” strip chosen to run by the syndication service that places Jim Davis’ creations taken place to run afoul of the sensibilities of some, in that it seemed to make light of even having a Veterans’ Day holiday.

Death of veterans not something Jim Davis celebrates

If the “Garfield” strip Jim Davis had ran on any other day other than Veterans’ Day, he wouldn’t have needed to apologize for it. He did not intend this to happen at this specific time. It was a case of bad timing that newspapers across the country had to deal with. A spider is threatened by Garfield within the cartoon. He uses a newspaper rolled up to do this. The spider then makes a statement. The path to immortality is being discussed her:

“If you squish me, I shall become famous! They’ll hold an annual day of remembrance in my honor, you fat slob.”

It doesn’t matter too much since the spider gets squished by Garfield anyway. After that there had been a teacher spider talking to a class of spiders asking “Does any person here know why we celebrate ‘National Stupid Day?’”

‘The worst timing ever’ happened here

Jim Davis said this. This had been in reference to Veterans Day having that strip. In his statement, he claimed the strip didn’t make any connections to veterans day. None were made literal anyway. The strip was made over a year ago. That is also what he said in his statement. “I do not use a calendar that lists holidays and other notable days, so when this strip was put within the queue, I had no idea it would run on Veterans Day,” Davis said. It doesn’t make sense that Veterans Day would mean nothing to Jim Davis considering his brother served in Vietnam and his son served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The ‘Garfield’ comic strip throughout the world is probably the most widely used

The “Guinness Book of World Records” talks about “Garfield” in 2002. It said that “Garfield” had been the “most widely syndicated comic strip within the world” then. Garfield the cat is a pop culture icon is books, films and countless merchandise.

Is America Ready to Change?

By admin

Now that the uproar of the 2009 election is over, it will be interesting to watch whether the surge of patriotism we saw will still be alive and well. This election was monumental because of President Obama’s African American lineage, but only over the long haul will we know whether that will be enough to garner peoples’ ongoing interest and support.

It would benefit everyone in the United States, because it’s finally time for us to be unified as one nation. American veterans of foreign wars would certainly benefit from such a change. Many gave their youths to serving in heinous wars and after serving in a war, they sometimes didn’t get the glory they deserved when they came back to the U.S.. That is the reason I created some veterans clip art that promotes the idea that we should honor veterans. This veterans clip art is just a small way we can all show our support. That appreciation could mean the world to veterans who have been disenfranchised. But we need to do more than just send yearly patriotic greeting cards. We need to appreciate their contributions every day. Anyone who has fought for the country has earned it. If that support doesn’t come from us; where will it come from?

Not only veterans would benefit, however, from the U.S. having renewed interest in unity. I would love to see people saluting the American flag when on parade, because they just couldn’t stop themselves from expressing their patriotism. One would hope that love of country will help promote peace. At this moment, it’s up in the air as to whether this unification will come to be. Some people are already vehemently opposed to President Obama’s changes. But that’s just the way American politics works. Dissension can actually help keep the process balanced. At least we hope so. The people of the United States will just have to see what happens.
